ROMAN CASTLES - INTRODUCTION
During the age of ancient Rome the Romans themselves loved to explore this area, probably the nicest environment around town, just like the present citizens (it is the favourite excursion "fuori porta", out of the gate, as they say). The "Castelli" always attracted emperors, popes, and cardinals as well. There is more than scenic, airy and panoramic places with unspoilt environment attracting them.
The volcanic area, including two lakes where the Castles are situated, was in fact the location where the ancient Latins first settled, forming a confederation of 30 villages. Finally, as an off-spring, Rome was founded by this population. Like dolphins crave to return to the ancestral birthplace, the Castles are thus embedded in the Romans' DNA. The Appian Way, the first paved road (312 BC) leading to the hills, was considered sacred. Still now, much of the ancient atmosphere and cultural traits can be appreciated in the Castles, while they were washed out by the hustle and bustle in the Eternal City itself. |
